Dave Fortin wins big!

Yep, Canadian Sessions rider Dave Fortin took first at the Grenade Games Finale making him 10k richer. Way to go Dave!

Mastering Whistler

A long overdue trip to Whistler just concluded for me. We (4FRNT) were invited to compete in the Orage Masters event this year. We've been participating in this "anti-comp" since day 1 and this year we finally made the finals and ended up 2nd. We scored a 15 day Retallac trip out of it so we're stoked.

While in Whistler and around the Masters comp, I was fortunate to have met up with our Japanese distributors during their epic qwest to Whistler for some spring shred. We met up with some other local friends and teammates and did a nice size hike up to a pretty classic zone in the Blackcomb backcountry called something Japanese ironically.

We seshed a full day in Blackcomb's park a couple days after the comp with COC filmer Leo. The other kids where crushing it, me not so much. Its cool to blame that on my 187cm lengths skis right? Skiing Alta this year has been great but I'm ready for park after that day. Man, Blackcomb has the park gig figured out and it was so much fun to just fly down the mountain off huge jumps with no impact. Peep the video.

Now I'm back in Utah. Warming up the moto season with a new bike I just got for street and dirt. I got a ride planned for late May through the Mendicino state forest to the coast. I'm psyched.

Winter is Back!

After a solid couple weeks of sunscreen, tees and park riding, winter is back and making one last stand in Tahoe. Kyle Miller, Andreas Gidlund, Taylor Carlton and myself have had some amazing days at Alpine Meadows and out in the backcountry on the sleds. Here are some photos of the past couple days.

Morning tune up on the sled

Miller was so stoked to be out there he was doing handstands

Andreas, taylor and Kyle hiking to the goods

We built this jump but the weather shut us down

Taylor getting loose

Some fun little lines you could double on the sleds.
Brett kicking out a method

Same spot... Miller Back 180

Lunch time!

Skullcandy Tube providing the tunes

Brett and Andreas hanging with the squirrels

Taylor and Shane took off to check out some other potential jump spots while we chilled at another jump. Five minutes went by and we got a call over the radio. Taylor put his sled into a creek hole. After some searching we found them and helped dig them out. keep an eye out for them holes... they sneak up on you!

We hit this spot at the end of the day... snow was weird but we still got some stuff

Miller popping over the nose

Taylor hitting a windlip

Get those pow turns in... Summer is knocking on the door

Where in the world is Tara Dakides?

Where in the world is Tara Dakides?

Correctly identify where this billboard of Tara Dakides is located and win a Tony Hawk’s RIDE for the Wii, Xbox, or PS3.

Obviously the possibilities are endless so…If you don’t have the free time driving all over The World in search of this billboard we have left you some clues…but you’ll have to search our website for them!

Remember the first two people to correctly identify “Where in The World Tara Dakides” is will win the Tony Hawks Ride Video Game! Good Luck!

Please send all entry's to Contests@sessions.com

First Clue: It is amazing how much Tara has achieved in her career, no wonder she is the most influential female snowboarder!

Thorley Talks...

For a few years now I have been noticing Ian Thorley doing insanely inverted maneuvers off pretty much anything. In addition to getting upside down Ian's riding is solid all around and he is usually in the top 10 of about any slope contest he enters. Ian grew up in Michigan, made the move to Waterville Valley New Hampshire to receive proper coaching and education. Ian took his east coast skills west and now crushes the Northstar Park on a regular basis. Ian may be under rated, if you don't believe me, fine but a 3rd place finish on the 09/10 Dew Tour and a 1st place finish at the Spin Cycle event at Mount Hood is evidence that I am correct in calling Ian a really good rider.

Go check out Snowrev.com for the full interview!

SUPERCHARGED, The Tim Brauch Documentary

NIMBUS "En Route Departure"

This edit is a short version of our full length 40 minute film titled "en route departure". if you like the edit you will really like the full length movie. en route departure documents two months of travel with the nimbus crew. everything that goes with a ski trip is portrayed in this movie; amazing powder, terrible conditions, airports, road trips, culture, etc. the en route series is an attempt to depart from the norm of ski film making. instead of jump after jump, en route departure is about the people, places and skiing along the way. ian cosco, bene mayr and christian sirianni join the original nimbus crew: pep fujas, eric pollard chris benchetler and blake nyman for a great adventure.

YoBeats Firing Squad!!

By Brett Butcher

Our friends over at Yobeat.com hold a contest called the Firing Squad. Two photos go head to head every week and the public gets to vote on which photo they think should win and move on to the next round. If you make it four weeks, your photo is submitted to the championship gallery and you win a Da Kine Camera Pack. Five weeks ago Jeff Hehlen's photo was picked for the firing squad and his photo went the distance. Here is the interview and photo! Yeah Jeff!!!

We have yet another black and white inductee to the Champions Gallery. Either black and white photos really better or are you guys just totally emo? Either way, Jeff Hehlen is the latest photographer to enter the champ’s circle. Hearty congrats are in order as his photo took down some worthy opponents. We caught up with Jeff to find out a little bit more about him and his shot.

When was this shot taken, where is it, and who is the stuntman?

The photo is of Brett Butcher in the Tahoe backcountry last February. Brett and I grew up shredding together. He used to look like Simba with braces, now he looks like Mufasa.

What set up did you use to make the magic happen?

Canon 5d with a 24-70 L-series lens.

What’s with the twig in the foreground?

People seemed really opinionated about that. I like shallow depth of field, and I framed the shot with the twig to add some some content to the foreground. And no, I did not place it there.

Was the jet stream planned or just dumb luck?

Smoke and mirrors.

If you took it again, would you do anything differently?

I shot a lot of different angles that day. I’m pretty happy with what I got.

What’s your story — where are you based and what do you usual shoot?

Portland Oregon, born and raised. I have a lot of pride for my hometown. I like shooting skating and snowboarding, and I’ve been carrying this old Nikon FM lately and shooting lots of black and whites of friends. I love working in the studio. I want to do a cross country motorcycle trip and shoot pics and put a book together. Maybe you could give me some advice, you’ve driven across the country like a million times.

Full disclosure: Do you feel like going to snowboard camp with me in the 90s helped you win the Firing Squad?

Yes. I knew when 15-year-old me met 16-year-old you, we’d both be famous on the Internet someday.

Do you have any insightful advice for people who want to get into
shooting snowboarding?

Learn your trade, go shoot film. Shoot as much as possible, and shoot everything. Have fun.

Check out more of Jeff’s work at jeffhehlen.com

wakeboarding

Welll....today was hot as a beavers den in July. Myself (Miller brah) and Andreas (deadlung) skipped our boards across the Truckee river. It was peaking near 60 degrees so a nice pond skim seemed appropriate. I totally thought we were not going to make it across the whole way. Nicki V gave it the guinea and it actually worked pretty well. So we sent it. There was no good way to cross the river so we got pretty wet getting across. Our boots are ripped open and sitting in front of the fan on full blast. Gonna be wet for a few more days probably. Here are some pics from today.
