Mastering Whistler

A long overdue trip to Whistler just concluded for me. We (4FRNT) were invited to compete in the Orage Masters event this year. We've been participating in this "anti-comp" since day 1 and this year we finally made the finals and ended up 2nd. We scored a 15 day Retallac trip out of it so we're stoked.

While in Whistler and around the Masters comp, I was fortunate to have met up with our Japanese distributors during their epic qwest to Whistler for some spring shred. We met up with some other local friends and teammates and did a nice size hike up to a pretty classic zone in the Blackcomb backcountry called something Japanese ironically.

We seshed a full day in Blackcomb's park a couple days after the comp with COC filmer Leo. The other kids where crushing it, me not so much. Its cool to blame that on my 187cm lengths skis right? Skiing Alta this year has been great but I'm ready for park after that day. Man, Blackcomb has the park gig figured out and it was so much fun to just fly down the mountain off huge jumps with no impact. Peep the video.

Now I'm back in Utah. Warming up the moto season with a new bike I just got for street and dirt. I got a ride planned for late May through the Mendicino state forest to the coast. I'm psyched.

Middle of nowhere Idaho

This past weekend I rallied up to a rail comp at Barrie's Ski and Sports in Pocatello. It was a carpet only event so I judged and hung out with the local kids. They put their carpet mat burns to the test and pushed pretty hard on a 100% artificial surface. Barrie's built a cool down box for the feature and later switched up the take off ramp to a more urban set up which was the first I've seen done. Modular, artificial and hyped heavy. They even had BBQ vendors there. A+ for a fall kick off parking lot extravaganza. Back to the report.

Midway up from SLC, in a place I swore not to tell, we rolled up to a field of full pipes. Naturally, skates in the back, we pulled off and headed down some farmer roads to find the pipes. We skated for a bit, it was ruffer (as always) than it usually looks and some gravel in the bottom didn't help. The weather and backdrop was all time for this lil excursion so we maxed out the trip with some skating. We later needed some hydrogen peroxide to clean up some flesh and scored a couple sick hick t's for 5 bucks.

Tim Humphreys Shreds Liberty Snowflex Grand Opening

September 1, 2009

If you haven't heard about it yet, Liberty University in Virginia has just had the grand opening of first and only Snowflex park in North America. Snowflex is an artificial snow surface that simulates the closest possible thing to riding on the real white stuff, It even has such features as a 20ft kicker, 10ft quarterpipe, and even some jibs set up. Once Sessions got word of this event (we are sponsoring the one coming to Califorinia) back about a month ago, we decided that it would be a worthwhile idea to go and check this stuff out to see if it actually works.
Tim Humphreys and I (Billy Flick) hopped on a plane last week to go and test this stuff out and see how you could actually preform on it. As it turned out it was a lot different than we expected but still really fun to ride on, as long as you didn't try to carve to hard on to your edges. It took us about five runs or so to get the hang of it, and then came the jump session. We got to shred the park for at least an hour by ourselves until a few other guys came out to ride with us and turned out to be a damn fun session "Shradical!" Once we were too tired of shredding we headed back to the hotel to wash up so we could go and check out the local snow/ skate shop SCENE3, and have Tim autograph some stickers for the kids. We then went out to dinner and checked out some of the VA nightlife, which there werent actually to many places to go but there were a couple of good spots to hang out, just a whole lot different than we were used too.
On Saturday we woke up early to go to the grand opening of the of the mountain and set up a tent so we could give out some goods, and talk to the media. Tim hung out at the tent for a while then went up to shred in the opening day ceremony demo that the mountain was putting on. He pretty much killed the show for only having one day to ride on it, not to mention it was in front of a 3,000 deep mob of spectators. After the demo we went and relaxed in the freshly built lodge deciding that it was worthy trip overall, even though it was a little unusual to be riding in 90 degree heat with humidity.
Sessions Is the official outerwear sponsor of the Morgan Hill Snowflex Center coming to the bay area, expected to open in the next three years.
